The EDENext Consortium is investigating the biological, ecological and epidemiological components of vector-borne disease introduction, emergence and spread, and the creation of new tools to control them. Due to environmental and socio-economic changes, vector-borne diseases (VBD) are becoming an increasing challenge for human and veterinary public health not only in Europe, but across the globe.
Emerging infectious diseases (EID) are often detected in Europe and North America but also pose major risks for developing countries, where many factors favour the emergence of VBD and there are limited health facilities to prevent, monitor or control their spread. Therefore the work of EDENext is not only as a means of protecting and improving public health and the welfare of European citizens, but part of a coordinated international effort.

EDENext builds on the concepts, methods, tools and results of the earlier EDEN project (Emerging diseases in a changing European environment). It is using the same general approach of understanding and explaining biological, ecological and epidemiological processes in order to develop a set of state-of-the-art methods and tools to improve prevention, surveillance and control of vector populations and VBD. However, while EDEN focused on the effects of environmental changes on the emergence of VBD, EDENext is seeking to explain and model the processes leading to the introduction, establishment and spread of vectors and/or VBD, and to assess the possible control strategies to break the epidemiological cycles of VBD. EDENext is a public health oriented project.

Following the successful formula established by EDEN, the project is organised around a set of vertical disease-related activities linked by horizontal themes which provide integrated technical input to the vertical groups, minimising duplication and ensuring a coordinated approach throughout the project.

Role of the National Institute of Research and Development for Microbiology and Immunology Cantacuzino in EDENext project.

INCDMI Cantacuzino: partner 22, acronym NIRDMI.

Background: NIRDMI team is involved in the following WP of EDENext project: “Emergence and spread of mosquito-borne diseases”. The main focuses of our activity are the mechanisms of emergence, of amplification and endemic maintenance of the West Nile virus (WNV) in the Danube Delta, as well as in other areas of virus activity. WNV is a mosquito-borne virus endemic in Romania. In 1996 and 2010 significant WNV outbreaks in humans have occurred, and the virus is transmitted to humans year after year, human cases being recorded in every transmission season. The bio-ecology of mosquito vectors and is studied, as well as the influence of climate changes on vectors and virus transmission.

The objectives of our activity are addressing both vectors and virus:

  • Mosquito vectors: we aim at identifying main mosquito-vectors of WNV, their blood-meal host preference, the dynamics of their populations across the transmissions season under the weather influence, their survival rate over winter, the WNV infection rate of different mosquito species;
  • West Nile virus (WNV): our goals are to understand the mechanisms of WNV emergence, maintenance and amplification in natural and urban ecosystems, and of its molecular evolution, via virus genome sequencing, and bio-informatics analysis.
