„Dr. I. Cantacuzino” Institute of Sera and Vaccines was founded in 1921, but Cantacuzino had created and run the Experimental Medicine Laboratory since 1901, when he was appointed professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest. Besides teaching and scientific activities, this laboratory prepared, for the first time in Romania, antistreptococcal and antidysenteric sera (1904).

The foundation law for „Dr. I. Cantacuzino” Institute of Sera and Vaccines was published in the Official Gazette of Romania on July 16th 1921, voted by the Parliament and promulgated by King Ferdinand on July 13th 1922 (Decree 3068). In 1924, the institute was moved into a new building, located close to „Victor

Babes” Institute. In the last 85 years, research in major fields of microbiology and related sciences has been developed, a number of vaccines and therapeutic sera have been prepared, specialists have been involved in public health, epidemiological surveillance of the Romanian territory and professional training.

The scientific school from institute concentrated in microbiology and experimental pathology. It has become one of the most important centers of research in biomedical sciences, hygiene and epidemiology, compared and infectious pathology, biochemistry, enzymology, immunology.


At present, we are a National Institute of Research and Development, with headquarters in Bucharest, a branch in Iasi and an experimental unit in Baneasa. The institute is a member of the International Network of Pasteur Institutes (RIIP) and is collaborating with institutions and universities from France, Moldavia, Germany, Italy, USA, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Hungary, Greece, Japan, Russia, Ukraine.


Activities in „Cantacuzino” NIRDMI are developed in three main centers: the Center for Advanced Studies, the National Expertise Center in Medical Microbiology and the National Center for Biological Products. There is an intense activity of teaching and specialists training within the Microbiology and Epidemiology Department of the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy from Bucharest.


In „Jacques Monod” Training and Documentation Center, founded with the kindly support of Pasteur Institute in Paris, are organizate international training courses. „Cantacuzino” Institute publishes quarterly the journal „Romanian Archives of Microbiology and Immunology”. As a member of RIIP, our institute has received support in specialists training (EU or USA) and financial support for surveillance and research programmes.
